The Nigerian Army has asked agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate 12 serving and retired senior military officers for their possible involvement in acts of graft.

The Nigerian Army has asked agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate 12 serving and retired senior military officers for their possible involvement in acts of graft.

A statement released today and signed by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the acting Director of Army Public Relations, disclosed that the officers under investigation comprise three serving Major Generals, one retired Major General, three Brigadier Generals, four Colonels and one Lieutenant Colonel.

Colonel Usman indicated that a military court martial would be convened to try any of the officers shown by EFCC agents to have stolen public funds.

The army statement did not indicate the names of the retired or serving officers under investigation. However, it had been previously reported that EFCC operatives questioned Alex Sabundu Badeh, who served as chief of defense staff under former President Goodluck Jonathan, and a former chief of air staff, Adesola Amosun. In addition, the EFCC in January sealed off an estate in Abuja owned by former chief of army staff, General Azubuike Ihejirika (ret.).
