Dumebi Kachikwu said his involvement in a Kentucky telecommunications firm Jefferson was backing left him so broke he was unable to pay his wife's college fees, The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Friday.

Kachikwu said he decided to cooperate with an FBI investigation of the former Democratic Louisiana congressmen because he "wanted some form of justice."

Jefferson has pleaded innocent to charges he used his congressional influence and office to push African projects in return for payments to himself or family members.

Kachikwu, a former part owner of Nigeria Digital Television, said he learned in May 2004 that Nigerian authorities were preparing to arrest the visiting congressman.

He said he alerted Jefferson so he could leave the country earlier than planned, avoiding arrest.

Jefferson is on trial in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia
