Tiziano Renzi and Laura Bovoli, the parents of the former prime minister, have been put under house arrest by tax police officers of the Guardia di Finanza, issued with an arrest warrant for offences of fraudulent insolvency and issuing false invoices. Both are accused of having “maliciously” caused three cooperatives to go under after having emptied their coffers and illegally making millions of euros. The companies are connected to “Eventi 6”, the family business already under investigation for its cavalier approach to accounting and the disappearance of funds. Gian Franco Massone, vice-chairman of one of the cooperatives, was also arrested.
This sensational turn in the investigation – led by state prosecutor Giuseppe Creazzo, his deputy Luca Turco and investigating magistrate Christine Von Borries – is linked to documentation seized in the autumn at “Eventi 6” offices regarding three cooperatives: “Delivery”, “Europe service Srl” and “Marmodiv”. The latter two have been searched in the last few months and the seized material – accounting books, invoices and contracts – reportedly corroborated the charges, convincing magistrates to request the arrest of Renzi’s parents over concerns they might try to tamper with evidence or commit further offences. The court found that prosecutors’ suspicions – i.e. that the cooperatives in question “did not engage in any business activities, but acted merely as a cover for other activities” – were justified.
“Failure to make payments”
The first to study this “system” was the state prosecutor of Cuneo, Pier Attilio Stea, during investigations into the company “Direkta Srl”. The file was then sent to Florence’s state prosecutor’s office precisely because of links to “Eventi 6”, and led to the decision to make an arrest in order to prevent the possibility of repeat offences. It is specified in the indictment that “the suspects caused the insolvency of the company as a result of malicious operations consisting of the systematic failure to pay social security contributions and taxes”.
Renzi camper van
Five other people are under investigation alongside the parents of the former premier, including Roberto Bargilli, who was the driver of the camper van Matteo Renzi used during the 2012 primaries. The others are directors in the cooperatives that allegedly facilitated what magistrates consider an illegal system.
