The number of crimes committed by law enforcement officers is getting alarmingly high in Russia.

For instance, in 2018, the number of violations by employees of law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and bailiffs decreased by 41.7% compared to the previous year, falling from 12 thousand to 7 thousand, but the number of violations increased in seven out of ten departments, Novye Izvestiya said with reference to the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.

The largest number of offenses was committed my employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 3819 (+10.4%); employees of the penitential service, 1018 crimes (+ 2.3%); bailiffs, 681 (-18.2%); Ministry of Emergencies, 391 (+ 23.3%); FSB, 178 (+ 69.5%). Federal Customs Service employees committed 177 crimes (-15.7%), judicial authorities 118 (+ 118.5%), Investigative Committee workers 110 (+ 52.8%); prosecutors 38 (-5%). The Rosgvardiya showed the most impressive growth with the number of crimes committed by its employees in a year increasing by 277%.

According to lawyer Maximilian Burov, the lack of control and arbitrariness affected the statistics. The attorney is convinced that authorities did not even bother to monitor ordinary employees. Occasionally "demonstrative flogging" and high-profile trials are carried out, while new crimes by law enforcement officers are committed every day and get almost zero reaction.
