Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) admitted on Friday that taxes would go up on some middle-class families under the Republican tax plan.

McConnell said during an interview with The New York Times that he misspoke when he said that nobody in the middle class is going to get a tax increase, “I misspoke on that. You can’t guarantee that absolutely no one sees a tax increase, but what we are doing is targeting levels of income and looking at the average in those levels and the average will be tax relief for the average taxpayer in each of those segments.”

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan was also caught making the same “misstatement” that no one would see a tax increase over the course of three straight days.

The media needs to characterize Ryan and McConnell’s statements correctly. The Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader intentionally lied as part of an effort to hide that it will be middle and lower income people who will be paying for the Republican tax cut for the wealthy.

The top Republicans in Congress tried to intentionally lie to the American people about who benefits from their tax plan, and they thought nobody would notice. The lack of transparency and the hubris of the Republican congressional leadership is unprecedented.

If McConnell and Ryan can’t be honest about who benefits from their tax plan, the odds are that ordinary Americans are about to be screwed.
