Construction workers ran over and killed the mayor of Signes, France, after a littering conflict.

Jean-Mathieu Michel, the 76-year-old mayor of Signes, France, was hit with a van and killed after a quarrel over garbage, according to France Bleu.

The incident occurred on Monday, when the official asked workers to pick up construction waste they illegally dumped from their van onto the road. The men complied, however, after they returned to their vehicle, they drove right at the mayor and ran him over.

The police detained the perpetrators and is currently investigating the incident. It is yet unclear if it was intended murder or a tragic accident.
