In the seventies, Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen was dominated by The Westies, an Irish gang of mobsters with a reputation for deadly violence. In the movie The Kitchen, moviegoers get to experience that scene, but with a twist: The women are taking over!

Starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss as three housewives with gangster husbands, The Kitchen details how these women have to fend for themselves when their men are sent to prison.

Taking over the business

While their men are doing their time, their bosses tell the wives they will be taken care of financially. However, things couldn’t be farther from the truth. Struggling to make ends meet, the three join powers in an attempt to take over the Irish Mob from the greedy bosses and carve out their piece of the underworld for themselves.

“They have been telling us forever that we're never gonna do anything but have babies,” says Kathy, played by Melissa McCarthy. After adding that she feels her husband forgot what it means to be a family, Ruby, played by Tiffany Haddish, responds, “So we remind them.”

The three powerhouse actresses are joined by Domhnall Gleeson, Bill Camp, Margo Martindale, Common, Brian d'Arcy James, and James Badge Dale in this original take on a familiar gangland tale. It will be in theaters August 9.
