NUPENG Calls for Nationwide Strike on Total Fuel Depots

Nigerian oil workers union, NUPENG, has ordered its workers to strike against Total’s fuel truck depots across the country. Orders for the strike went out on January 5.

NUPENG said it had ordered its members to take part in the industrial action, with immediate effect, and was holding talks with Total. Workers in the southwest part of Nigeria had already begun their work stop protest when NUPENG called for a nationwide strike.

Nigerian labor unions have in recent months criticized oil companies for laying off workers, but given the state of an industry crushed by low crude prices and production brought down by militant attacks, it is hard to blame oil firms for cutting expenses where they can.
